Long before he moderated the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, David Muir was gracing the airwaves of Boston’s local news.

Muir, who has been an anchor for ABC News since 2003 and host of “World News Tonight with David Muir” since 2014, previously worked at Boston’s ABC affiliate, WCVB. On Tuesday, he co-moderated the presidential debate alongside Linsey Davis.

The 50-year-old propelled his career as an anchor and reporter in Boston, where he won the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting and was honored for his work on the Sept. 11 attacks.

Here’s what to know about Muir and his career, including his time in Massachusetts.

David Muir used to be a reporter in Boston

Before becoming the face of ABC’s “World News Tonight”, David Muir was a reporter and anchor in Boston for WCVB.

Muir worked for the station from 2000 to 2003, when he left for ABC News.

During his time at WCVB, Muir received the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting and Associated Press honors for his work tracing the path of the Sept. 11 hijackers, according to his ABC News bio. He also earned at WCVB the National Headliner Award for his reporting on the War in Iraq.

In a 2022 interview with WCVB’s Maria Stephanos for the station’s 50-year anniversary, Muir spoke about how his time in Boston shaped his career.

“What I remember most is not necessarily what people saw at home,” Muir said. “It was behind the scenes at Channel 5 and how I felt, really the moment I arrived, you know, that whole ‘put me in coach’ sort of feeling. The first week I got there, I was out in the field right away doing reporting for the evening newscasts.”

Muir also said he has strong memories from his time at WCVB.

“One of the things, when you walk into Channel 5, is you learn right away that you are part of a much larger thing,” Muir said. “I remember looking around the newsroom. I remember right where my desk was, you know, Jack Harper, Janet Wu, Pam Cross, all of these veteran reporters who knew their communities, who knew the issues and who cared.”

Additionally, Muir said he still considers Boston and WCVB a special place.

“I feel like it’s still home for me,” he said.
