Klay Thompson’s future with the Golden State Warriors is uncertain after spending his career with the franchise and winning four NBA Championships.
All indications suggest that the 34-year-old sharpshooter will enter free agency for the first time this summer, according to league insider Shams Charania of The Athletic.
While he is “open to all external options,” Thompson focuses on one specific demand by seeking a three-year contract to secure his long-term future, per team insider Monte Poole of NBC Sports.
Thompson understands that he won’t command anything close to his current five-year, $190 million max contract, which he is entering the final year of in 2024-25 and will earn $40.6 million.
If he signs a three-year contract this summer, the deal would keep the four-time NBA champion in the league until his age-37 season.
Klay Thompson contract talks lasted almost a year
Golden State and Thompson have been negotiating an extension for nearly a year, but nothing fruitful has materialized.
The shooting guard didn’t help his cause with poor performances in 2023-24, wherein he averaged less than 20 points for the first time since 2013-14 with 17.9 points per game.
The 6-foot-6 player also shot 38.7% from three-point range in 77 games, the second-worst mark of his career, just after the 38.5% clip in 2021-22 when he played in only 32 games.
