The Boston Marathon isn’t just a show of powerhouse athletes.
The event is also an economic powerhouse.
A new report compiled with data released by the Boston Athletic Association found how much money the marathon brings in. MeetBoston and the UMass Donahue Institute also contributed to the data for the report.
“The Boston Athletic Association organizes and holds one of the most iconic road races in the world: the Boston Marathon,” the report said. “The marathon provides a showcase event for the city and creates economic opportunities for businesses throughout the region.”
How much money does the Boston Marathon bring in
According to this report, the Boston Marathon brought in $509,100,000 in state and local economic activity during marathon weekend. The marathon also helped create over $200 million in labor income and just a bit over $330.5 million in gross product.
The report found that the Boston Marathon helped drive almost $72 million in charity impact through the marathon’s official charity program as well as creating 2,900 jobs.
Other statistics were found as well through the report’s participant and spectator surveys: $429 was the median nightly rate of visitors in Boston, they usually stayed for three nights and over half of them were from outside of New England.
