“I want to see a different kind of landscape than what we have in New England.”
Boston.com readers are dreaming of an international escape in 2025.
When we asked our readers where they want to travel this year during an informal poll, 78 percent said they want to travel internationally. After that, 20 percent said they want to travel within the U.S. and 2 percent said they want to travel in New England.
Ahead, discover the destinations where local residents really want to go this year.
“Our family will be traveling for the first 7 months of 2025 and are most looking forward to visiting Southeast Asia,” wrote Katrina from Sharon.
Pete from the North Shore and Tom from Quincy both want to go to Ireland. Tom also wants to go to the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Meanwhile, Carol from Boston is dreaming of Iceland, Greenland, and Scotland.
“Now all I need is the money,” Carol wrote.
Josephine from Brookline specifically wants to see the Shetland Islands in Scotland and doesn’t mind going solo.
“Fell in love with them through a book with black and white photos in the library when I was a kid,” she wrote. “Then I became a knitter and the thought of being on an island with more sheep than people appealed to me. The landscape was also a draw because of my black and white film photography.
Oh, I would not take anyone with me. Can’t think of anyone in my life who would be up to rambling in wind and rain and rocks and cold water.”
Phil from Scituate wants to see the Norwegian fjords, Bill from Newton would love to go to Raja Ampat, Spud from Andover is thinking about Japan, and Bob from Stoughton is eyeing Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada.
“Incredible skiing and scenery,” Bob wrote about Banff.
Marie from Chelsea wants to go to Italy, Jay from Acton yearns for Sydney, Australia, and Liam, a New Bedford native, is dreaming of Spain.
“The Costa Brava in the Catalonia Region of Spain is stunning,” wrote Liam. “Travelers can walk from village to village along a rugged and beautiful coastline. Local seafood and culture abound. Walking with family is possible since the walking paths are solidly constructed.”
Greg from Acton will happily go to any of the following destinations: Poland, Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Mike from Saugus is thinking about Germany.
“I studied there once and still understand quite a bit of the language,” Mike wrote. “It’s clean, has good public transportation, and much lower crime than this country. I’d also like to see Stockholm again, a surprisingly beautiful city.”
While most readers are dreaming of leaving the country, some are excited about trips within the U.S. this year. Bob from Merrimack wants to go to Maui and Greta from Northborough is planning trips to California’s Death Valley National Park and Joshua Tree National Park.
“I’ll be going with my family and the reason is because I love nature and I want to see a different kind of landscape than what we have in New England,” she wrote.
