Outside of the emergence of quarterback Drake Maye, the Patriots are doing little to turn heads around the league. Their 3-9 record and multiple weeks of uncompetitive football are cause for evaluation across the board of the Patriots’ players and coaching staff.

As part of the frustrations surrounding the Patriots, rookie head coach Jerod Mayo has come under fire at times this season, most notably for publicly calling his team soft after a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Despite any criticisms given to Mayo, though, NBC Sports Boston’s Albert Breer reported Sunday that Mayo is on “really solid ground” heading into next season.

“I just get the feeling that they know where they are and that this is going to take a couple of offseasons to get through,” Breer said of his conversations with people close to the Kraft family. “There wasn’t anybody blind to the fact that the roster was not in a good spot coming out of 2023. And it’s not like they had a bunch of young talent that they could start to build off of.”

The same can’t necessarily be said for the staff surrounding Mayo, though.

Through 12 games, New England is last in the NFL in total yards per game (280). It’s also last in passing yards per game (167.3), while its rushing yards per game (112.8) are middle of the pack across the NFL.

Defensively, the Patriots aren’t much better; they allow the 11th most yards against in the NFL (348.3). So, on both sides of the ball, New England is not getting many positive results as a whole, despite seeing some promise from individual players.

“There are a lot of aspects of the organization that I think will be under evaluation over the next six weeks,” Breer said. “That said, I do think they have respect for the spot that Jerod Mayo has been in. … I still think Jerod Mayo is on really solid ground going into 2025. The other question is how different will it look around him, and I think there are fair questions to ask when it comes to that.”

So, while Mayo’s job appears to be safe heading into a second year, Breer’s report would indicate that other changes could be made to the staff if the final weeks of the season don’t show improvement in certain areas.
