After a torrent of floodwaters overwhelmed the Ted Williams Tunnel on Interstate 93 during heavy rains in Massachusetts on Wednesday, state officials responded the following day to concerns about infrastructure safety.
But the mayor of Boston and the head of Massachusetts highways gave very different opinions on the issue at separate press conferences on Thursday.
“This is a very, very rare occurrence that we have that kind of flooding … I want to assure people the tunnel systems are safe,” Jonathan Gulliver, Massachusetts Highway Administrator for the state Department of Transportation, said as he addressed reporters around 2:30 p.m.
