BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Boston announced that it will be signing the Children’s Bill of Rights in Sports.

This measure will make youth sports in Boston more inclusive and safer for all children who want to participate.

The city plans to give 55 youth sports organizations a total of $300,000 to cover expenses that come with the athletic world.

Mayor Michelle Wu hopes this will give many more children the opportunity to join athletics, especially those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

“These funds will help pay for equipment and fees and reduce the upfront costs for young people and their families to participate because whether you can pay should never be a barrier to whether you can play,” Mayor Wu said.

Wu also mentioned how as a soccer mom for her kids, she has seen just how important an outlet like athletics is for the youth.

Another aspect of this measure was also for Let’s Play Boston to release an online map of every athletic facility in the city.

This should allow for a growth in awareness of nearby resources, which will add another layer of accessibility for youth interested in sports.

Massachusetts native Michael Carter-Williams of the Orlando Magic and 2014 NBA Rookie of the Year has partnered with this program and hopes to emphasize just how important outreach is in the sports world, especially for kids.

“Show them that there’s people from this area that have made it to the highest level,” Carter-Williams said. “Give them that belief that they can make it.”
