Boston’s expansion addition to the National Women’s Soccer League — which will take the field in 2026 — officially has a name.

The team will be known as “BOS Nation Football Club,” and will feature “championship green” as its primary color.

“This new identity embodies the strength, creativity, and pride of the city of Boston, its unique blend of old and new, its famed diehard fans, and its new generation of fans united by their love of the world’s beautiful game played by many of the best female athletes in the world,” the club said in its announcement.

“BOS Nation FC is an anagram for ‘Bostonian,’” per the release.

Boston was awarded an expansion team in the NWSL in 2023. The club is led by Jennifer Epstein (controlling owner), and managing owners Stephanie Connaughton, Anna Palmer and Ami Kuan Danoff. (Among the list of other investors is Linda Henry, a limited partner, who is also the chief executive officer of Boston Globe Media, which includes Boston.com).

BNFC also announced the addition of two new investors with Massachusetts roots: Actress and producer Elizabeth Banks and Olympic gold medalist and advocate Aly Raisman.

“I grew up a Boston sports fan and have special memories of going to Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, and Patriots games with my dad,” said Raisman. “It’s so important for kids to see themselves in their role models and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to support the growth of women’s soccer and sports in my hometown. I’m excited for the BOS Nation FC players to experience the same love and passion I’ve received from the Boston community and look forward to watching them inspire the next generation.”

The team will begin NWSL play in 2026, though it still has to clear several major hurdles. The club’s home is set to be at a renovated White Stadium, a nearly $100 million project that has already faced legal challenges. In addition, Boston will have to grapple with the details of a new collective bargaining agreement that will be fully implemented by 2026. It will carry restrictions on trades, the elimination of the draft system (including the expansion draft) and a major expansion of free agent eligibility.
