Worldwide tech outage affecting Logan airport. Microsoft 365 working to fix problems

Major airlines, media companies, banks and telecoms firms around the world reported systems outages Friday that were disrupting their operations.

Many flights out of Boston Logan Airport had been grounded this morning (Friday) due to the technology outage.

“Due to a global computer outage affecting airlines, many flights are being delayed or cancelled. Please check with your airline before coming to the airport,” Logan Airport wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Worcester Airport is also warning travelers of problems.

Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is also reporting problems.

What airlines grounded flights?

On Friday morning, Logan Airport had grounded all flights around 5:30 a.m. according Wicked Local media partner WCVB Channel 5.. If you’re scheduled to fly out of that airport, it’s best to check ahead.

American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines were among those who grounded flights at different U.S. airports less than an hour after Microsoft said it resolved a cloud-services-related outage that impacted several low-cost carriers.

Frontier Airlines and Sun Country Airlines posted on X that they were also among the airlines affected by the outage. Frontier posted on X that a major Microsoft outage was affecting booking, check-in, boarding pass access and some flights.

What caused this problem?

According to a report in USA Today, “the outages appeared to be linked to an update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, which is used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, the U.S. firm said in a promotional video this year.”

In a post on X, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said the outage was not a “security incident or cyberattack.”

He explained it was connected to a “defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts.” He said the issue has been “identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.”
