The former first baseman and outfielder spent the final three seasons of his 11-year career in Major League Baseball with the Red Sox.

He was at Fenway Park earlier this month as the Red Sox paid tribute to the team who won the World Series in 2004.

McCarty, who went to Stanford, played 630 games in MLB with seven teams after being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the 1991 MLB Draft.

He also represented the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Marines, Kansas City, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Oakland Athletics before ending his career with the Red Sox.

After retiring, McCarty stayed in the Boston area and worked as a Red Sox TV analyst for New England Sports Network.

His former teammate and Red Sox pitcher Lenny DiNardo paid tribute to McCarty on social media.

‘Just awful news. I was happy to be able to spend time with him at our reunion,’ he said.

‘Such a great guy. He’ll be missed. Hug your loved ones.’
